Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban

Plot introduction

Throughout the two previous novels in the Harry Potter series, the main character, Harry Potter, has struggled with the difficulties that come with growing up and the added challenge of being a famous wizard. When Harry was a baby, Voldemort, the most powerful evil wizard in living memory, killed Harry's parents but mysteriously vanished after trying to kill Harry. This results in Harry's immediate fame, and his being placed in the care of his muggle, or non-magical, relatives Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon.

Harry enters the wizarding world at the age of 11, enrolling in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and is confronted by Lord Voldemort trying to regain power. After returning to the school after summer break, several attacks on students take place at Hogwarts after the legendary "Chamber of Secrets" is opened. Harry ends the attacks by killing a Basilisk and defeating another attempt by Lord Voldemort to return to full strength.

Plot summary

Harry leaves the Dursleys after getting angry with Uncle Vernon's visiting sister; she inflates and flys away. He is picked up by a magic Bus and arrives at The Leaky Cauldron; he meets Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Harry finds out Aunt Marge has been rescued and he will not face any punishment. Harry hears about Sirius Black, a murderer who has escaped the wizard prison ‘Azkaban’. Harry meets his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry finds out he could be a target of Sirius Black. While on the trip to Hogwarts, the Hogwarts Express is searched by Dementors, Harry's soul is almost taken by Dementors but the professor Lupin saves him. Two new teachers arrives at Hogwarts, Remus Lupin and Rubeus Hagrid. Draco Malfoy gets attacked by Buckbeak (the Hippogriff). Malfoy’s father sentences Buckbeak to death. During Quidditch Harry gets attacked by a dementor. Harry makes Lupin teach him a Patronus Charm, a shield and guardian against the Dementors. Sirius Black breaks into the castle. Fred and George Weasley show Harry a secret passageway to Hogsmeade, the local village where most students are allowed to visit on weekends. Harry overhears that Black was a great friend of the Potters and Harry's godfather, but betrayed them to Lord Voldemort, and murdered their friend Peter Pettigrew. Ron is attacked by a dog and dragged into a passage beneath the Whomping Willow (a tree). Harry and Hermione follow him in and come into a building called the Shrieking Shack. They discover that the dog has transformed into Sirius Black. Harry tries to attack Sirius before Lupin arrives. Lupin admits he’s a werewolf and that Sirius and Pettigrew were friends with James Potter. Sirius was supposed to protect the Potters but secretly switched this duty to Pettigrew. Sirius did not kill Pettigrew, Pettigrew escaped by blasting the street and turning into a rat, and they force Scabbers (Ron’s rat) to reveal his true identity. Ron’s rat was Pettigrew. Harry stops Black and Lupin from killing Pettigrew and they return to the castle. Full moon comes and Lupin turns into a werewolf, Pettigrew escapes and Harry and Sirius are surrounded by Dementors who try to start to destroy Harry’s soul, they are saved at the last minute by a Patronus sent by someone who Harry believes to be his father. Harry finds out that Black is about to be in lots of trouble even though Dumbledore privately explains that he believes their story. Hermione uses her time turner to take Harry back in time with her Harry and Hermione rescue Buckbeak and re-watch the scenes of the night, until they see the Dementors cornering Harry and Sirius. Harry is wants to see who sent the Patronus, only to realise at the last minute that it was himself. With this knowledge, he casts a powerful Patronus which saves his past self and Sirius. Sirius is rescued and flys on Buckbeak. Snape is angry over Black's escape and is convinced that Harry, Ron and Hermione were involved, but is completely unable to prove it as neither of them appear to have escaped from the Hospital Wing ever since they came. Lupin resigns the next day. On the way back from the school, Harry gets a letter from Sirius saying that he is successfully in hiding.
